Medicare basics in a nutshell

Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people 65 and older, as well as some younger people with certain disabilities. It’s made up of several parts:

Part A

Hospital insurance, covering things like inpatient hospital stays and some skilled nursing care.

Part B

Medical insurance, covering doctor visits, outpatient care and preventive services.

Part C (Medicare Advantage)

Plans from private insurers that bundle Part A and B coverage, often with extra benefits.

Part D

Prescription drug coverage offered through private plans approved by Medicare.

Key dates to know

Initial Enrollment Period

A 7-month window around your 65th birthday: the 3 months before, your birthday month and the 3 months after.

Medicare Open Enrollment

October 15 to December 7 each year. This is when you can review and change your Medicare coverage for the next year.

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment

January 1 to March 31. If you’re in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can switch plans or go back to Original Medicare.

Open Enrollment is happening now. If you already have Medicare, now is a good time to compare your options for next year before the December 7 deadline.

How a prescription savings card can help

Prescription costs can add up quickly. A free savings card like the one from GoodRx may help you find a lower price on some medications at participating pharmacies. It can be especially useful for prescriptions your plan doesn’t cover, or when the discounted price is lower than your copay.

Good to know: A discount card is not insurance. If you have Medicare Part D, you generally can’t use a discount card and your Part D plan on the same purchase.

Money you spend using a discount card usually doesn’t count toward your plan’s deductible or out-of-pocket costs. Compare prices both ways and choose what saves you more.
