At least three Chinese-linked individuals have been arrested in recent weeks in relation to separate incidents involving the alleged smuggling of biological material into the U.S. The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced Monday that a Chinese citizen was recently charged with smuggling packages containing concealed biological materials related to roundworms into the country, according to Just The News. The individual, Chengxuan Han, was arrested at Detroit Metropolitan Airport after making false statements to Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) regarding packages she brought into the country. Han is said to be getting her doctorate from the College of Live Science and Technology at Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan. Roundworms are a type of parasite that infect humans with an infection called ascariasis. Symptoms of the infection from roundworm larvae are similar to pneumonia, including wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath and a fever, according to the Cleveland Clinic. A female roundworm can lay up to 200,000 eggs a day in the human body. The researchers, 33-year-old Yunqing Jian and 34-year-old Zunyong Liu, allegedly received funding from the Chinese Community Party (CCP). “The alleged actions of these Chinese nationals — including a loyal member of the Chinese Communist Party — are of the gravest national security concerns,” U.S. Attorney Jerome Gorgan said in a statement following the arrest. “These two aliens have been charged with smuggling a fungus that has been described as a ‘potential agroterrorism weapon’ into in the heartland of America, where they apparently intended to use a University of Michigan laboratory to further their scheme.” What Does Fusarium Graminearum Do? The fungus would allow the researchers to allegedly propagate live Fusarium graminearum, which causes “head blight” in biological materials, CNN reported. The fungus is filled with toxins that devastate core crops such as wheat, barley, maize and rice. America would not survive if these crops failed, even just for a single season. When consumed, the fungus causes liver damage, reproductive defects in humans and livestock, and can lead to symptoms like vomiting, skin irritation, digestive issues, while long-term exposure can cause neurological disorders and immunosuppression. Unknown Object Is Firing Signals At Earth Every 44 Minutes, Baffling Scientists
Scientists announced in late May that an unknown object is firing a signal toward Earth every 44 minutes, and no one has any clue what it is … and it’s not alone The object, oh-so-catchily named “ASKAP J1832-0911,” emits pulses of radio waves and X-rays for a full two minutes every 44 minutes, according to a statement shared by astronomers at the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR), in collaboration with other international teams. This is the first time a signal like this — known as a long-period transient (LPT) — has been detected in X-rays. (MORE NEWS: Best Crops To Grow During A Nuclear Apocalypse, According To Scientists) It is unclear how or where the signal is coming from, but the researchers proposed models of highly magnetized neutron stars, white-dwarf pulsars, and more to explain the phenomenon, according to the study published in the journal Nature. How Was The Signal Found? A team working at the ASKAP radio telescope in Wajarri Country, Australia, discovered ASKAP J1832-0911 by correlating the radio signals with X-ray pulses detected by NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory. Both teams happened to be observing the same part of the sky when the signals were detected. “Discovering that ASKAP J1832-0911 was emitting X-rays felt like finding a needle in a haystack,” said lead author Dr Ziteng (Andy) Wang from the Curtin University node of ICRAR. “The ASKAP radio telescope has a wide field view of the night sky, while Chandra observes only a fraction of it. So, it was fortunate that Chandra observed the same area of the night sky at the same time.” The LPT Is Not Alone LPTs like ASKAP J1832-0911 are a “relatively recent discovery,” the team noted, having only been first detected in 2022. Since then, at least 10 LPTs — signals of unknown origin — have been discovered by astronomers around the world. Many LPTs are linked to magnetars — neutron stars with extremely strong magnetic fields — but the actual characteristics and physical nature of LPTs are still hotly debated within the scientific community. Anti-Trump DIA Employee Arrested For Allegedly Leaking Top Secret Intel to Foreign Government

An IT specialist employed by the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) has been arrested for allegedly attempting to transmit classified national security information to a foreign government. Nathan Vilas Laatsch, 28, was arrested close to the nation’s capital and is scheduled to make his initial court appearance in June. Laatsch became a civilian employee of the DIA in 2019 and held Top Secret security clearance in the Insider Threat Division. In March, the FBI launched an investigation after receiving a tip that an individual offered classified information to a “friendly” foreign government. The federal employee apparently indicated in an email that he did not “agree or align with the values of this administration” and was therefore “willing to share classified information” to which he had access, including “completed intelligence products, some unprocessed intelligence, and other assorted classified documentation.” Following communications with an undercover FBI agent, the anti-Trump employee began transcribing classified information to a notepad at his desk. The FBI then organized an operation in a public park where Laatsch was said to have planned to deposit the classified information for the foreign government to retrieve. “On May 1, FBI surveillance observed Laatsch proceed to the specified location and deposit an item. Following Laatsch’s departure, the FBI retrieved the item, which was a thumb drive later found to contain a message from Laatsch and multiple typed documents, each containing information that was portion-marked up to the Secret or Top Secret levels,” prosecutors said in the press release. “The message from Laatsch indicated that he had chosen to include ‘a decent sample size’ of classified information to ‘decently demonstrate the range of types of products’ to which he had access.” After receiving confirmation that the package had been received, he again contacted the undercover FBI agent and asked for compensation. Additional meetings were set up by agents after Laatsch agreed to share more classified information. Hurricane Warnings Ramp Up For Summer With ‘Above Normal’ Forecast
Atlantic hurricane season starts this month and pretty much no one is excited for it, especially since it may be an “above” average year. Hurricane season start on June 1 and runs through November 30 each year, according to Live Science. This turbulent time in our annual calendar could be 60% more active than normal, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said in late May. Anywhere from 13 to 19 named tropical storms are anticipated, with anywhere from six to 10 of them turning into hurricanes. Thankfully, NWS has predicted highly active hurricane seasons for as long as any of our editorial team can remember. It is smarter to over-warn and under-deliver when it comes to Mother Nature, especially with so many of our major cities and urban centers lying in flood zones. Is This A Fair Forecast? Even in the most recent forecast, LiveScience notes that “normal” years see roughly 14 named storms, seven of which become hurricanes, with three being classed as “major” hurricanes. However, the season actually resulted in 18 named storms, 11 hurricanes, and five major hurricanes,”the outlet wrote. What Prompted The Forecast? Warmer-than-average water temperatures in our oceans and potential for high activity throughout the West African Monsoon season. “This outlook is a call to action: be prepared. Kennedy Jr. announced in late May that the COVID-19 vaccine will no longer be part of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommended immunization schedule. Kennedy announced the removal of the controversial vaccine in a video recorded alongside National Institute of Health director Jay Bhattacharya and Food and Drug Administration commissioner Marty Markary. “Last year the Biden administration urged healthy children to get yet another COVID shot despite the lack of any clinical data to support the repeat booster strategy in children,” Kennedy stated in the footage. Will Summer 2026 Be The Season Of The Blackout? Energy Grid Fails In Major US City
New Orleans, Louisiana, fell into darkness on May 26 after operators were pushed to a “last resort” measure to prevent a larger crisis. The totally unprotected and unsustainable nature of the U.S. energy grid is an ongoing area of research for our experts at TMM. As you may have read in our prior reportage, the threats posed against our grid are myriad in nature, stemming from our cosmos, terrorism, and out-of-date equipment. From Energy Reporter Audrey Streb at Daily Caller News Foundation: New Orleans was plunged into darkness on Sunday afternoon when the region’s grid operator cut off power to reduce usage, a “last resort” measure to prevent a large-scale blackout, according to Nola.com, a local news outlet. The Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO), a major electrical grid operator, directed the energy company Entergy to reduce power with only three minutes’ notice to prevent a blackout, affecting nearly 100,000 customers, according to Nola.com. Power was fully restored after several hours, though concerns about the power grid’s reliability remain as President Donald Trump’s administration, energy policy experts and multiple North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) reports have signaled that MISO is at an elevated risk for blackouts due in part to phasing out coal-fired power plants. “The forced outages were directed by MISO as a last resort, and done in order to prevent a more extensive, prolonged power outage that could severely affect the reliability of the power grid,” Entergy said in a Sunday statement. “How does this happen?” New Orleans City Council member Joe Giarrusso told Nola.com. “There are lots of questions that need answering.” Giarrusso and fellow New Orleans City Council member Helena Moreno said MISO warned Entergy of the outage just three minutes before turning off the power, though the reason for the short notice was unclear, according to Nola.com. The blackouts affected approximately 100,000 customers in and around New Orleans, according to 4WWL, a local CBS affiliate. Louisiana Public Service Commissioner Davante Lewis, whose district includes New Orleans, said that one Entergy generator was offline for scheduled maintenance when a second generator supplying the region also failed, the outlet reported. Lewis noted that the power demand exceeded projections at the time and added that he was unsure as to whether the second generator was operated by Entergy or Cleco. Two days before the blackouts, Secretary of Energy Chris Wright ordered MISO to ensure that the J.H. Campbell coal-fired power plant in West Olive, Michigan, continues to operate in order to prevent potential capacity shortages that could cause power outages. “This administration will not sit back and allow dangerous energy subtraction policies threaten the resiliency of our grid and raise electricity prices on American families,” Wright said Friday. “With President Trump’s leadership, the Energy Department is hard at work securing the American people access to affordable, reliable, and secure energy that powers their lives regardless of whether the wind is blowing, or the sun is shining.” The MISO grid powers portions of 15 Midwestern states and has reduced its reliance on readily available energy sources such as gas, coal or nuclear power, opting instead to pursue solar and wind resources to meet demand. Turns Out There’s A Catch To California’s Rosy Population Stats (+BONUS ANALYSIS)

In 2024, nearly 240,000 Californians packed up and left the state, WSJ reported. The state’s population still rose by 0.6% overall because more than 361,000 immigrants arrived to take their place. The exodus from the state is not a new phenomenon, as around 344,000 Californians left in 2023, while 292,000 international migrants arrived, the outlet reported. California’s median home price topped $900,000 in 2024 — well over double the national average — while utility and gas prices remain among the country’s highest. The state’s population decreased for the first time in history in 2020, when over 477,000 Californians left, leading to the state losing a congressional seat. The population continued to decline until 2023, buoyed by an influx of international immigrants. Population Trends The H-1B visa program, which allows businesses to employ skilled foreign workers with bachelor’s degrees, brought nearly 79,000 workers to the state in 2024, WSJ reported. However, applications for the program fell by 25% compared to a year ago due to higher fees and expectations that the Trump administration could impose more restrictive immigration policies. The H-1B visa program has sparked fierce debate among Republicans in recent months. While big names such as Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy have defended the program, opponents have argued it allows companies to undercut American workers by importing cheaper labor from abroad. In addition to California, many states rely on immigration to drive population growth. In 38 states and Washington, D.C., immigration outpaced domestic migration last year, and in 16 states, it was the only reason populations grew, WSJ reported. California has the highest share of foreign-born residents in the nation, with more than 25% of its population born outside the U.S., according to the Public Policy Institute of California. As of 2022, about 17% of California’s immigrant population was in the country illegally, according to the Pew Research Center. The office of Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom did not respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
